Sauna Care & Enjoyment Guide

🌿 The Clover Difference: Your Complete Sauna Care & Enjoyment Guide

With just a few simple habits, your sauna will stay beautiful, clean, and ready for years of relaxation and wellness. This guide walks you through everything you need to know—from wood care and heater safety to getting the most out of every session.

🌲 1. Understanding Your Sauna’s Wood

Your sauna is crafted from premium softwoods. Because wood is natural, you may notice small dents, light scratches, or tiny cracks over time. These are completely normal and do not affect performance or your warranty.

🛠️ Fixing Minor Wood Imperfections

  • Dents:
Place a damp cloth over the dent for about an hour. Gentle heat (hair dryer or iron on the cloth) helps lift the fibers. Lightly sand with 220‑grit if needed.
  • Light scratches (unfinished wood):
Apply a thin line of wood glue, wipe excess, then sand with 220‑grit.
  • Finished exterior scratches:
Try furniture polish first. For deeper marks, lightly sand (240–300 grit) and apply a thin coat of water‑based polyurethane.
  • Black painted accents:
Use the included Tylo touch‑up paint with a small brush or Q‑tip.

🔥 2. Traditional Sauna Care

Daily Care

  • Always sit on a clean towel.
  • After each session, do a quick 30–60 second wipe‑down:
    • Dip a soft brush in plain water
    • Lightly scrub benches and surfaces
    • Leave the door open to dry

Deeper Cleaning

  • For sweat stains, use a soft brush with a mild detergent (1 capful of Dawn in 1 gallon of water).
  • Every few years, lightly sand benches with 220‑grit to refresh them.
  • If you have duckboard floor panels, lift and clean underneath them regularly to prevent mold growth.
  • Optional: Apply pure paraffin oil to benches every ~40 hours of use.

Important Cleaning Notes

  • Use pH‑neutral cleaners when possible.
  • Avoid bleach, ammonia, citrus cleaners, or harsh disinfectants.
  • Never paint, stain, or varnish the interior — finishes can off‑gas and shorten the life of the wood.

🌞 3. Infrared Sauna Care

Daily Care

  • Sit on a clean towel.
  • Wipe away excess sweat after each session.
  • Leave the door slightly open to help the sauna dry.

Cleaning Wood & Cloth Surfaces

  • Mild detergent + soft brush for stubborn stains.
  • Heavy stains can be sanded with 220‑grit.
  • Paraffin oil can be applied every ~40 hours to protect bench surfaces.

For Black Cloth

  • Wipe with a dry towel
  • Use water only for spot cleaning
  • Vacuum dust or lint
  • Use masking tape for stubborn lint

Safe Disinfecting Options

  • Hydrogen peroxide spray is safe for wood and effective for sanitizing.
  • Never spray cleaners directly onto IR emitters.

🔥 4. Heater Care

Traditional Sauna Heater

  • Use only fresh tap water on the rocks — never spa or pool water.
  • Avoid Himalayan salt or aromatherapy oils on the rocks (they can damage the heater and void the warranty).
  • Replace cracked stones annually.
  • Stack stones with airflow gaps — never pack tightly.
  • Never cover the heater or place items on it.

Infrared Heater

  • Keep heater surfaces dust‑free.
  • Never spray cleaners directly on emitters.
  • Ensure vents remain unobstructed.

⚡ 5. Electrical Safety

  • Turn off the power before deep cleaning.
  • Never use extension cords.
  • Ensure your sauna is on a dedicated circuit.
  • For outdoor saunas: inspect wiring annually for weather‑related wear.
  • Contact a professional if you notice unusual smells, discoloration, or inconsistent heating.

🧖‍♂️ 6. How to Enjoy Your Sauna

There’s no wrong way to sauna — but these tips help you get the most out of every session.

🔥 Traditional Sauna Use

Before You Begin

  • Close the upper vent for faster heating.
  • Heat the sauna for 30–60 minutes.
  • Beginners typically enjoy 150–160°F.
  • Shower quickly and enter while still warm.
  • Bring a clean towel and a bucket of fresh tap water.

During Your Session

  • Open the rear vent for airflow.
  • Start with 5–10 minutes, cool off, then repeat.
  • Add small ladles of water to the rocks to adjust humidity.
  • Use the Rule of 200:
    Temperature + Humidity ≈ 200
  • Stand up slowly to avoid dizziness.
  • Drink water before, during, and after.

After Your Session

  • Do a quick brush‑and‑wipe of the benches.
  • Turn off the heater.
  • Enjoy a cool shower and a refreshing drink.

Traditional Sauna Safety

  • Avoid large meals and alcohol beforehand.
  • Never smoke or exercise in the sauna.
  • Consult your doctor if you have heart disease, diabetes, or are pregnant.
  • A little water goes a long way — one cup creates 1700 cups of steam.
  • Never use heat‑sensitive electronics (phones, earbuds, etc.).

🌞 Infrared Sauna Use

Before You Begin

  • Close the ceiling vent and preheat for 20–30 minutes.
  • Set the temperature slightly higher than your preferred level (optimal IR range: 120–130°F).
  • Shower or do light movement.
  • Drink 6–8 oz of water.

During Your Session

  • Sit on a clean towel.
  • Open the ceiling vent for airflow.
  • Beginners: 10–15 minutes
  • Experienced users: 20–30 minutes
  • Drink water as needed.
  • Avoid lotions or oils before sessions — they can stain wood and reduce sweating.

After Your Session

  • Wipe up excess moisture.
  • Turn off the sauna and leave the door slightly open to dry.
  • Enjoy a cool shower and a refreshing drink.
  • Never use heat‑sensitive electronics.

👶 7. Kids & Sauna Use

  • Always supervise children.
  • Use lower temperatures:
    • Traditional: 110–130°F
    • Infrared: 100–120°F
  • Keep sessions short (5–10 minutes).
  • Ensure they hydrate before and after.
